What is the Equine Gestalt Coaching Method®?

The Equine Gestalt Coaching Method® was developed by Melisa Pearce, a core founder since 1989, of the horse-human healing movement. The experiential nature of the method involves the horse as an active partner with the coach in the client’s exploratory process. The integrative approach of the equine’s interaction combined with positive coaching, somatic awareness guidance and Gestalt methodology, assists the client in examining their life and choices made with a focus on designing a positive future.

What is “Gestalt”
Gestalt means “The whole”- it implies wholeness. Gestalt is a type of coaching that deepens our awareness of our feelings and our overall wellbeing. The idea behind Gestalt coaching is that we all have unfinished business caused by suppressing emotions or parts of ourselves due to them not being supported or accepted. Unfinished business can be not expressing feelings, good or bad, toward a person or situation. It can be unresolved conflict, not grieving over a loss fully, holding onto past negative experiences, or any other emotions or situations anything that you are still holding onto from one week ago to fifty years ago. This unfinished business goes into the background and inhibits us from living to our full potential in the present. Gestalt coaching brings the background into the foreground, and deals with the unfinished business in the present moment. The Gestalt methodologies help uncover the unfinished business helping us focus on being aware of feelings and what our body is telling us moment to moment. Through the process of the Gestalt methodologies, we are able to finish what was brought up from the past, allowing us to move forward in a more positive, healthy direction.

Why Horses?
Horses operate in the present and therefore have little unfinished business, if any. Therefore, they are magnificent teachers for us who are striving to live in the present to manifest our full potential. Being large prey animals, they have a heightened sensitivity to their environment for their survival.  They are extremely sensitive to energy around them, positive and negative. They are able to reflect this back to us, helping us reach powerful personal insights that lead to change in ourselves. Horses give us the amazing gift of their hearts which refreshes and renews our soul.

No horse experience necessary!
